Welcome to the Real World PMP Blog

Welcome to the Real World PMP Blog

My name is Tom Dickie and I am a certified project manager, a father, a husband,  a son, a brother, a student and a whole lot more.

So what does a certified project manager mean? I took a class, was able to document 2500 hours of project related experience and took a test to get my certification and I passed the Project Management Institute (PMI)  Exam as a Project Management Professional. The exam was 200 multiple choice questions based on the Project Management Body of Knowledge. Think of this as the SAT for Project Managers

I just completed my Masters Degree in Technology and Innovation with a focus in Project Management.  I also work as an adjunct instructor for a local university teaching Project Management and Business Analysis for the Executive Development Center. I currently manage a PMO for a small company located in Rhode Island and we are in the process of developing our methodology and approach to project management.

I spend a lot of time looking at Project Management and techniques and have come the conclusion that there 2 different worlds in project management. There is this concept of the perfect world where the organization follows the best practices put forward. In this wonderful world it is always sunny and warm and you have the resources needed and the time to fully plan your project and can follow a methodology to deliver projects on time and on budget. Then there is the real world model,  the sun does not alway shine, resources are not available and the organization does not follow what the book said. Scope is changing, risk come out of no where and you as the project manager are trying to juggle competing projects to deliver value in the organization. I have worked at a few different companies and seen different approaches and I am the Goldilocks PM. This methodology is too heavy or this methodology is too light. I want to find the one that is just right.

This blog will take a look at various aspects of the perfect world project management and a real world application of the techniques based on experience and try to find the just right approach.

Thanks for joining me and I hope you enjoy the journey.
